Day Wise Itinerary
Day 1 — SRINAGAR - SHITKADI BASECAMP
  • You are required to reach Srinagar Airport by 01:00PM and contact our representative. If booked earlier we can arrange a shared cab service to the basecamp. Drive to the basecamp will take around 3 hrs.
  • On the way you will be passing by many villages and drive beside the famous and sparkling Sindh River. This is going to be your ?rst night of camping where you’ll be given all the information about the trek and it’s do’s/don’t by the Trek Leader. The process of your document veri?cation and health review will start at 04:00PM. In the night you will be served wholesome dinner by the bon?re.
  • The trek starts 3kms out of sonmarg on Srinagar-Leh road. Today’s trek consists of 3hrs ascent to a high ridge ?lled with Maple and Pine trees. At the highest point of the ridge you can tree Sonmarg town and its surrounding valleys below, nestled between sparkling streams and beautiful meadows. This is followed by an hr of descent to Shekhdur meadows. This meadow is lined by silver birch trees and shepherd huts. Small peaks showered with snow serve as a backdrop for Shekhdur meadow. Trek on to the River Valley, which is the beginning of Nichnai Pass.
  • Terrain to the campsite is rocky but leveled with a mild ascent along the bank of a river. The river valley widens into a green meadow between two mountain ranges.
  • Choose ?at ground area in the green meadow to pitch tents.
  • Today's trek is an extended walk on meadows with the best scenery of the entire trek until the end.
  • Starting at 08:00AM, the ?rst stop of the day is Vishansar Berry or Nichnai Pass. This pass looks like a huge tunnel due to a chain of snow clad mountains on the left and high altitude land on the right. From here you will descent to another green meadow ?lled with red ?owers and a waterfall. Cross multiple meadows and streams to reach the Vishansar Lake. This lake is also famous for trout ?shing though a ?shing permit is required that can be obtained in Srinagar.
  • Pitch you tents near the last stream leading to Vishansar Lake and enjoy your dinner under the starry sky
  • Today’s trek starts with a steep 2hr trek to the top of the ridge. You see a narrow line traversing across the mountain side. That is your trail, that will treat you to the most amazing views of both the Kishnsar and Vishnsar lakes together. This view remains until the top of Gadsar Pass. The other side of the pass consists of an extended valley that has two to three small lakes. Ahead of the valley is yet another meadow ?lled with red, blue and purple ?owers. Near this meadow is the pristine Gadsar Lake. You can choose to camp near the lake or at Gadsar military camp,
  • forty-?ve minutes away from the lake. On the way spot another blue lake, mountain chains and shepherd huts.
  • From the military camp move left towards the stream. The trail crosses the stream and heads upwards to the mountain. The trail is now above the timber line and the river valley is visible below.
  • After one and a half hour ascent, you will reach a ?at trail that goes through meadows on a mountain. This place is called Maengandob.
  • The landscape ahead is of isolated mountains. Towards the right there’s a small ridge with a ?at green landscape and stream ?owing through it. Today too you stay at a military camp for the night. It is near the start of Satsar Lakes
  • Satsar is really a group of seven lakes. You can only see 4 or 5 of them with water, depending on the season you select to trek.
  • Today’s trek starts with a bouldery terrain. The ?rst thing you will notice out of the camp are the Satsar Lakes. Last of these lakes is also largest one. Until here it is a steep ascent followed by half an hour of descent.
  • The trail ascents again and takes you to the top of the primary ridge after 45 mins of trek. Follow the ascending trail for another 2 hours to reach the top of the third ridge. View from the top of these ridges will not fail to astonish you.
  • After trekking for another two hours, you will reach Nandkol Lake. You can either trek here or trek for another 20 minutes to reach Gangabal Lakes and pitch your tent in the clearing near it.
  • Today’s trek is all about descends.
  • Gradually descend from Gangabal campsite to the end of the ridge. Then some more to the ?at green meadows. An hour out of the campsite you will reach the fringes of the timberline and see traces of civilization with the presence of log huts.
  • As a trademark of this trek, you do not lose altitude now but start to climb up a small height. For about 6 kms altitude is around 10,800ft mark. You will come across a pine forest and after walking for 2/3 of it steep descent begin.
  • The last stretch of the ?nal day is an endurance test. After 4kms of descend the stone paved village trail is reached and you enter the road of Naranag.
  • From here you are to board the cab to Srinagar airport and hence ends your beautiful Great Lakes trek.
